Dr Graham's Homes Earthquake Appeal
Richard Lowe has been asked by Lt General Johnny Mukherjee (Assam Regiment Indian Army), the Board Chairman of Dr Graham’s Homes, to help in raising funds for the Dr Graham's Homes Earthquake Appeal. General Johnny was Colonel of the Assam Regiment. He attended Staff College at Camberley and is now retired.
The Assam Regiment was raised by Lt Col R C Howman 7GR in 1941. It is interesting to note that the lineal descendants of 6GR included the 8th Assam Light Infantry in 1827 and subsequently the 1st Assam Light Infantry in 1850, the (Assam) Regiment of Bengal (Light) Infantry in 1865 and the 42nd (Assam) Regiment of Bengal (Light) Infantry in 1885-1886.
Dr Graham’s Homes was founded by Dr John Anderson Graham in 1900 as a home and school for mainly abandoned Anglo-Indian children. The school has grown considerably over the years and also cares for children from very poor and deprived backgrounds. There are over 400 sponsored children and another 1,060 who are supported entirely through the auspices of the school.

The school is located in Kalimpong part of the Darjeeling, Kurseong and Kalimpong municipalities, home of many ex-6GR retired officers and men including the famous Major Harkasing Rai MC (Bar), IDSM, MM, and Major Hariparsad Dewan. The Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) recently won the municipal elections for the region.
The tragic earthquake that struck on 18th September this year has destroyed and damaged a large number of the school’s buildings that must be replaced or repaired - a mortal blow for this wonderful school.
